Marcie Paper Gallery
While I create it, my work is about
life in the present moment. As the
paint dries and as it is viewed, it is more an accumulation of short-term
memories. Didn’t sleep last
night, Just now I am drinking my tea, Long Phone Conversation, Soup for Lunch,
Stubbed my toe, Starting to get a sore throat, More Daylight, Keep having to
pee, Elections, Waiting for the G Train… I
honor these experiences and seemingly insignificant events for the role that
they play and the impact they have on, my ever-changing, present moment. Abstracting and re-presenting these
events through paint I have been able to hold on to a little longer, understand
a little better, and have physical evidence of, my existence.
My interest in memory has been
fueled by my personal experience with memory loss. My father has been diagnosed with a brain disorder that has
left him with no short-term memory. Through his experience I have gained both
an interest in and an appreciation for the mundane, and both short and
long-term memories. My
painting practice hopes to answer questions that have grown out of this
interest and appreciation. When do
our daily experiences transform into our recollections of the past? How much of our long-term memory is a
sum of small insignificant events?
Is this whole greater then the sum of its parts? How do short and long term memory
influence each other? If
short-term memory is lost, is it only a matter of time before we loose our
long-term memory? And
ultimately, what is the impact of memory on our concept of our selves and our
placement within the world.
